Colourful bloomers hang on rails with frilly bottoms and purses made from bicycle inner tubes are piled up in a rummage box. This is the work of Ffrili Jilli, Cardiff’s latest vintage brand with an exciting twist.
The concept derived from a bicycle and a love for vintage fashion. Designer Jill Davies, came up with the idea when she became tired of sewing trousers that had worn through because of the commute to work. She began sewing frills onto the back of her own trousers and soon friends were asking her to do the same.
Jill says: “I like making new things out of old clothes rather than getting rid of them, I was always sewing up holes in my trousers. The frill on the back of my clothes was the fashionable alternative.”
Jill also makes bespoke purses and tote bags from bicycle inner tubes. The brand recycles, commissions, makes sewing alterations and repairs.
Jill says: “With these times of austerity hopefully people will go back to the old fashioned make do and mend. If your favourite item of clothing is starting to wear out send it to me and I’ll revamp it into something new.”
Ffrili Jilli is at Cardiff Fashion Quarter, on Womanby Street seven days a week 10-6. You can also find the stall at various festivals and markets. To keep up with Ffrili Jilli events like their Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/148000338644314/
